This story tells us of a household initially controlled by Father, along with Ye Ye and Nai Nai, who later become cowed by Niang, as shown through imagery: â€Å"The room was completely still. The only sound I heard was that of Ye Ye chomping on his apple. Surely he was going to say something to put Niang in her place!† With the shift of power in the household, Niang proceeds to obstruct Adeline’s future, especially after her confrontation with little sister. Following this incident, Niang uses Adeline as a scapegoat to vent her frustrations. This quote shows to us that Niang, as the head of the family, controls everything from Adeline’s education to what she eats, and that no-one dares to confront her at present. Soon after Adeline runs for class president and wins, her friends follow her home to congratulate her success. Unfortunately, Niang feels the complete opposite, and severely scolds her stepdaughter for supposed bragging, as borne out by her shrill rant: â€Å"Stop bragging!† she screamed. â€Å"Who do you think you are? A princess of some sort, that all your friends should come and pay you tribute? You are getting altogether too proud and conceited! No matter what you consider yourself to be, you are nothing without your father. Nothing! Nothing! Nothing!† This quote informs the reader that Niang has little regard for Adeline. And since Niang is the head of the house, no-one dares to confront her about berating Adeline. People will feel much better when someone comforts them in a loving way. We see this happen when Adeline expresses her joy with further imagery: â€Å"Adeline! Your aunt is here to take you out of school! She is sailing to Hong Kong next week and wants to take you with her!† My heart gave a giant lurch as her words sank in. For a dazzling moment, I knew with every fiber of my being that somehow, against all odds, Aunt Baba had come to my rescue! The whole of me was vibrating with joy, and I ran as fast as I could toward the visitors’ lounge, followed by Mother Marie.† This quote shows Adeline’s utter joy that shines through when she sees Aunt Baba. Even though Adeline is trying not to burst into tears, she eventually does, not because she is sad, but because she is happy. Yet even though Aunt Baba has provided an essential role in Adeline’s life by comforting her in the past, she does not seem to do so this time. All she seems to do is wait for Adeline. During the whole of the autobiography, it is evident that Ye Ye always believed that no matter what you try to change, you will always be who you are. And instead of trying to overcome yourself, you should accept it, even embrace it. This idea is presented through symbolism in the following passage: â€Å"My mind was full of gloomy thoughts, and I suddenly burst out, â€Å"I’m sick and tired of blindly copying Chinese characters over and over into my notebook like a robot! I hate studying Chinese! It’s a waste of time.† â€Å"You may be right in believing that if you study hard, one day you might become fluent in English. But you will still look Chinese, and when people meet you, they’ll see a Chinese girl no matter how well you speak English. You’ll always be expected to know Chinese, and if you don’t, I’m afraid they will not respect you as much.† Together, these quotes explain to us that even if Adeline pours all her time and energy into learning English, she will forever be Chinese, expected to speak and understand the language. This memoir reveals to us the importance of having a stable and loving family, with people who care about you and who will remain valid for life. This is emphasised throughout the whole book. Even though Adeline was regarded as back luck, she was still able to see it through and live a happy and fulfilling life in the end.

Minimum wage has long been a topic that has brought on many heated debates. It has been said over and over again that minimum wage should be raised. These people say that raising minimum wage only does good for people. However, I, along with many other people, believe this is wrong, and we should instead be making moves to keep minimum wage where it is. Raising minimum wage may provide some positive effects, but those positives only go on to be overwhelmed by the negative effects caused by it. Wages should not be raised because if done so, employment would drop and companies would need to spend and earn more money. If minimum wages were to be raised, employment numbers would drastically drop. They would have to take huge action to earn that money back or just sit back and suffer the effects of that loss. This is also seen in source four, a political cartoon by Ralph Hagen. In this cartoon, a worker is giving a customer his coffee. As he does this, he tells him, â€Å"That’ll be $12.50.† As said earlier, companies who spend more money would need to earn more money. One easy way for companies to earn more money is by raising the price of their products. Eventually, it could get to a very ridiculous point, just like how it was in this cartoon. Usually, coffee is two to four dollars, but in this cartoon, it was said to be over twelve dollars. This reason that this price was so high was probably because that coffee shop had to desper ately earn money due to the fact that they raised their minimum wage. Eventually, the rise of minimum wage in our world could lead to ridiculous prices like this. As a result, companies should not raise their minimum wage as they will suffer many financial problems. As soon as it touches human skin or has contact with the inside of the body all blood turns into ice and the person dies instantaneously. Bokonon gets trapped by the people of San Lorenzo and they tell him what God has done and ask what they should do. Bokonon wanting the easy way out, tells the people that God was surely trying to kill them. Bokonon wanted to give them a simple way out so he told them to touch the Ice Nine and their blood froze and they instantaneously died. Although, Bokonon being a genius himself did not take his own advice, because he knew it was worthless. Overall, Vonnegut is a great writer and can express himself in a very unique way that I admire. Grignard arylation - Lab Report Example In this reaction, the C=O bond the ketones is attacked by the Grignard reagent to yield an alkoxide ion. The alkoxide ion formed is then protonated by H+ to form alcohol and MgBrOH (McMurry): A 50-mL round-bottomed flask containing 20 mmol of magnesium turnings and a stirbar was flame dried. A rubber stopper was affixed to the flask after it had cooled and then assembled with an addition funnel from the oven before it had cooled. Grease was applied to the glass-to-glass joints to prevent them from freezing as the parts cooled. The addition funnel was charged with a solution of phenyl bromide (20 mmol) in anhydrous ether (15 mL). 1 mL of the solution formed was then added into the flask and stirred until the reaction started. Once the reaction had begun, the rest of the phenyl bromide solution was dripped in over several minutes, at a rate that maintained a gentle reflux. Following the addition, the reaction was allowed to proceed for 20 minutes. During this period, heat was added to maintain the reflux. The Grignard reagent was allowed to cool. A solution of cyclopentanone (13 mmol) in anhydrous ether (10 mL) was added through the addition funnel while stirring. The reaction mixture was worked-up as follows: a sufficient amount of 3M HCl was added to acidify the reaction mixture. The aqueous layer that formed was extracted with CH2Cl2. While swirling, the combined organic layers were washed with 10 mL of 10% aqueous sodium bisulfite and 10 mL of brine. The organic layer was dried and the solvent obtained evaporated over a steambath. The residue obtained was stored in a shell-vial with a well-fitting cap. The workup was repeated by my partner; however, he used 20 mL of 10% aqueous NH4Cl in place of 3M HCl. While placing the order in the canteen we used to say ‘Hey boss, do cutting chai.’ (Two half teas) People in India are growing up in a multilingual surrounding, resulting in code mixing (mixing of two or more languages). It has a basic size of 17 inches by 22 inches and a basis weight of 13 to 25 pounds. Erase capability, good absorption and rigidity also characterized it. This is classified as 24 pound-bond and was determined since this one ream of bond is cut to its basic size but if it weighs 24 pounds. This level is expected to be high when the surface of the paper is flat and even. Smoother surface will help the accumulation provide a sharper and higher quality image. Printability is the ink receptivity, uniformity, smoothness, compressibility and opacity. His style is rather simple, with simple sentence structure on the whole, and quite simple vocabulary, he wanted to keep everything simple in this way in The Crucible, to prevent focus being taken away from the plot and the problems that the characters were facing with each other. So Miller does keep it all simple, however at the same time Arthur Miller has managed to create his own dialogue. The position of the plants should have been closer together not that far apart. The plants placed in the dark under the bench were the furthest from where the plants in the light and room light were assigned. The amount of water being put in the pots and the consistent watering made the trays flood with water making the pots more than Just moist. The water in the trays wasn’t emptied so it was there for quite a while and was it got emptied a bit later on in the experiment. The dependent variables in the experiment were the growth and the progress of the Lana and this depends on the amount of water, amount of sunlight being taken into place. The control that was kept the same for each plant was the amount of water being put into the pots. The accuracy of the experiment wasn’t to professional expectations but it was taken into considerations of the factors that can affect it. There could be more to make this experiment better and also with the results that were taken. The reliability of the experiment was reliable as it was compared to another student’s similar works done in their time in year 12. But what could have made it more liable is that the experiment could have been repeated another time since the plants start sprouting after 5-7 days after being planted. The plants in sunlight grew normally but those of the same species grown in the dark where there is absence of light elongated much faster to increase their chance of finding light. They were pale in color due to the lack of chlorophyll. The plants that were place in the normal room light grew but the stem wasn’t as thick as the one in the light. The energy reserves of the seed were used up therefore it leads to the plant dying in comparison to the one exposed to light. Other factors in the environment, such as salinity and pH of soil, also affect the phenotype of a plant that would otherwise appear normal.
